-- Describe the basic protections in the Bill of Rights -- Explain how the legislative branch work Activities: -- Continue filling out structure of US Constitution sheet on the Bill of Rights (see below) -- Briefly discuss what some of these mean -- With a partner, continue filling out p. 5 & p. 6 in the government packet, using the U.S. Constitution and the "Congress in a FLASH" handout -- Go over answers in class Independent Learning: -- None Notes/Handouts/Material covered in class: -- Add to US Constitution structure sheet: Amendment 4: Searches Amendment 5: Criminal proceedings (have to be officially charged with a crime based on evidence, don'r have to testify against yourself-- "pleading the 5th", due process, can't be tried twice for the same crime, no taking property with compensation) Amendment 6: Criminal proceedings in a trial (speedy trial, public trial, right to confront witnesses, right to subpoena testimony, right to an attorney) Amendment 7: Civil trials Amendment 8: Cruel and unusual punishment Amendment 9: Promise of other rights not listed Amendment 10: Other rights are given to states or to the people
