Objectives: -- Describe what happened in the Holocaust -- Describe ways to resist genocide Activities: -- Discuss the difference between concentration camps and extermination/death camps -- Highlight extermination camps on handout and note other particularly egregious camps -- Receive and read Junior Scholastic magazine on the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII, specifically, the article on the Holocaust -- Discuss the concept of genocide, citing examples in modern history (Armenia, the Holocaust, Muslims in Serbia, Hutus & Tutsi's in Rwanda, Daesh's attacks against Yazidis (Kurds), Shi'ites,and Christians -- Read in the packet received yesterday about the Danish resistance and protection of Jews (and their property) during the Holocaust -- Receive handout on ways to prevent or stop genocide -- Work on Holocaust page in WWII booklet Independent Learning: -- WWII booklet due tomorrow Notes/Handouts/Material covered in class: -- Genocide = genos (race) + cide (murder); word created in 1948; once concept is created, laws against it can be made
